Olympics, Always Controversies

Olympic controversy-1

The Olympics and controversy seemingly go hand-in-hand. As a result, the legacy adapts, strengthens and lives on. Do you see any similarities between the following Ancient Olympics history and, Modern Olympics?

The Greeks tried to keep some aspects of politics out of the Olympics, but their efforts met then, as such efforts do now, with limited success. The Olympic truce was meant to lead to a cessation of hostilities throughout Greece, to allow competitors to travel and participate safely, but it was not always observed.

Participation in the Ancient Olympics was limited to free Greek male amateur sportsmen (Herodotus V.22.2 Winking. Non-Greeks, slaves, people accused of murder or blasphemy, and women (with some rare exceptions), were not allowed to compete.

However, these regulations did not put off scores of people from flocking to Olympia to watch the Games, travelling from all over the Greek city-states and colonies as far afield as Africa and the Iberian Peninsula. At its height, the Ancient Olympic festival probably hosted over forty thousand people.
