Figure skating is the oldest winter sport in Olympic history, initially being added to the Summer Olympic Games in 1908 until its transition to the inaugural Winter Olympics In 1924.
Ancient Olympics was a Summer-only event. There are approximately 1.7 snow days in Greece, not hardly conducive for Winter sports.

Olympics, Always Controversies

Olympic controversy-1

The Olympics and controversy seemingly go hand-in-hand. As a result, the legacy adapts, strengthens and lives on. Do you see any similarities between the following Ancient Olympics history and, Modern Olympics?

The Greeks tried to keep some aspects of politics out of the Olympics, but their efforts met then, as such efforts do now, with limited success. The Olympic truce was meant to lead to a cessation of hostilities throughout Greece, to allow competitors to travel and participate safely, but it was not always observed.

The London 2012 theme of ‘truce’ echoed the Ancient Olympic tradition of ekecheiria (sacred peace); Classical ideals of equality and self-improvement still motivates athletes to compete fairly and push themselves to the limit

Different times - Parallel hazards

Despite many differences, we are experiencing the irony of parallels between Ancient and Modern Olympics. While our recent Modern Olympics had to struggle with the safety challenges of covid-19, the site of Ancient Olympics is threatened with raging wildfires now threatening the Olympic Academy in ancient Olympia, in western Greece. https://www.politico.eu/article/greece-wildfires-august-2021-crisis-evia/?aid=app_feed&utm_source=pocket_mylist

Shared Legacy of Ancient to Modern

A series of underlying principles and values inherited from Ancient Greece are still central to the modern Olympic spirit. For example, the London 2012 theme of ‘truce’ echoed the Ancient Olympic tradition of ekecheiria (sacred peace)

One of many contrasts between Ancient and Modern Day Olympics: Ancient Olympics began around 776 B.C. and referenced the gods of that era. These every-4-year games lasted for several centuries until abolished during the early Christian era, for being pagan celebrations. Modern games are now secular.
